- Jan 13, 2018 -

Black Peppercorn Grinder is used in homes and restaurants across the country, but how much do you know about these types of mills?

Fun Facts about Pepper and Salt Mills:

According to Wikipedia, pepper and salt mills date back to the Peugeot family who began manufacturing grinders back in 1842.Most of these grinders are similar to coffee mills, but instead of using a handle, the top rotates to grind the right amount of spice or salt. The ingredient is grounded and then spread straightforwardly into the food. Some mills, however, do not rotate, but use two abrasive surfaces to grind the salt or pepper.

Electricity powered Black Peppercorn Grinder:

Electric Black Peppercorn Grinder can be powered with either a battery or electricity. Electric mills are much more efficient than manual grinders, but the spices can become heated because of the small amount of friction.

Tips for Using Salt and Pepper Grinders

1. Clean the grinder portion of the mill with a small brush or toothbrush and rubbing alcohol or even window cleaner.

2. To keep peppercorns fresh, keep them in an airtight container away from the sun.

3. Use pepper frequently to keep it from getting stale too quickly.

4. Grinders can be adjusted with a mechanism or screw to produce coarser or finer grinds according to your preference. For a finer grind, it helps to take the peppercorns out of the mechanisms prior to grinding.

5. Never put the grinder in water unless the instructions state otherwise.

6. Never put moist salt into a salt mill because the grinder will clog.

As mentioned below, it is important to never put salt into a pepper mill (unless it is one of the grinding mechanisms listed below) because it will easily corrode steel and other materials.
